About

Hi. I’m Carrie Lou Hamilton, a writer, teacher, researcher, editor and translator based in London.

I’ve taught history and gender studies at universities in the UK for twenty years, and am currently a course tutor in the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics. I’m also a professional writer, editor and translator.

My book Veganism, Sex and Politics: Tales of Danger and Pleasure (2019) has been described as “a wonderful and inspiring contribution to the ethics and politics of veganism “, combining “science, philosophy, storytelling, and more to examine the use of animals for food, clothing, medicine, sexuality, and identity“.

I’m the author of books on Basque and Cuban history, as well as many academic articles and chapters. I’ve published numerous articles and works of creative nonfiction on animals, drugs, feminism, sexuality and sex work, the most recent of which is Sex Work in Europe Between Decriminalisation and Prohibition (with Samir Jeraj), Green European Journal (27 June 2023). I also write a monthly newsletter on writing and activism.

I edit and translate (Spanish-English) both fiction and nonfiction. My recent editing work includes #SayHerName: Black Women’s Stories of Police Violence and Public Silence by Kimberlé Crenshaw and the African American Policy Forum (Haymarket Books, 2023). I specialise in academic texts by scholars in the humanities and social sciences, academic writing aimed at non-specialist readers, and creative nonfiction. I have served on the editorial boards of major academic journals, working with both emerging scholars and established authors.

I am fully bilingual and work fluently across English and Spanish. After finishing my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, I lived for two years in Madrid, and since then I’ve lived and worked between the two languages for more than thirty years. I’m also fluent in French. My latest book translations are The Fabric of Fear: Building Franco’s New Society in Spain, 1936-1950 by Jorge Marco and Gutmaro Gómez Bravo (University of Liverpool Press 2023) and From Ashes to Text: Andean Literature of Sexual Dissidence in the 20th Century by Diego Fálconi Trávez (Polity 2022).

Please see the Editing, Translation and Writing pages for more about my services and publications and to read testimonials about my work.

Please note that I am not currently taking on new editing and translation clients.
