Stylistic Editing

Once a text is written, but before it goes to the copyeditor and printer, some authors will want to have an editor read their work and make suggestions for improving the language and style, and identify and correct grammatical and other errors. This is sometimes called line editing because it involves going through the text line by line to ensure precision, best choice of words and good sentence/paragraph structure, and to eliminate examples of convoluted or awkward language, repetition and so on.

Stylistic or line editing is appropriate for writers who are confident about their ideas and the structure of their work but would like a professional editor to help ensure they use words and sentences in the best way to convey their meaning to the target readership. One example might be an author writing in a new style, for example, an academic writing a work aimed at a general audience. Other examples include authors whose first language is not English, and who want an experienced English-language editor to correct and refine their written English.
